Hoshikin Koi Farm

The house

Hoshikin Koi Farm, located in Ojiya City, Niigata Prefecture near Yamakoshi, was established by founder Kinsaku Hoshino, who set out roughly 70 years ago to breed Kohaku meeting three self-defined standards: true red color, a well-balanced red (hi) pattern, and freedom from small black spotting (shimi). He built the line from two pairs of Kohaku parents of the "Tomoin" bloodline, which the farm has stayed faithful to ever since. Kinsaku passed the operation to his son Katsushige, and it is now run by the family's next generation, Katsuyuki Hoshino. On roughly 100,000 square meters of raising area, Hoshikin has become known specifically for Kohaku, producing Nidan, Sandan, and Inazuma step-pattern forms under a breeding philosophy summarized as "if the white is right, the red will turn out right as well."
