Marudo Koi Farm was founded around 1970 in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture by Hisashi Hirasawa, who began his koi career at age 15 at Dainichi Koi Farm and spent 18 years there under master breeder Minoru Mano before establishing his own operation. The farm now spans over 100,000 square meters of ponds, produces roughly 1.5 million fry annually, and keeps only about one in 300 fish through rigorous culling. It is run today alongside Hirasawa's son, Toshihiro, and daughter, Keiko, representing a multi-generation family operation. Marudo built its reputation on Kohaku, Sanke, and Showa developed from bloodlines closely related to Dainichi's, and its koi are regular prizewinners at national competitions.
