Ogata Koi Farm
The house
Ogata Koi Farm was founded by Manabu Ogata, who trained in Nishikigoi breeding at Izumiya Koi Farm in Ojiya City, Niigata Prefecture under Ichiro Mano before starting a full-scale Nishikigoi business in Fukuoka in 1978; the farm achieved its first successful in-house production in 1972 and was incorporated as Ogata Koi Farm Co., Ltd. in 1997. Unlike most famous Japanese breeding houses, which are concentrated in Niigata, Ogata operates from Kurume City on the island of Kyushu. A home-bred Kohaku named Benimaiko won Grand Champion at the All Japan Nishikigoi Show in 1987 and became the farm's symbol, and home-bred koi went on to win the Kokugyo Prize for three consecutive years starting in 1995. The farm exports worldwide and today produces roughly 30,000 selected yearlings annually from about 3 million young fish.
