Shintaro Koi Farm

The house

Shintaro Koi Farm is located in Yamakoshi, Nagaoka, in Japan's Niigata Prefecture, and was founded and is run by Shintaro Mano. While the farm produces Kohaku and Sanke, it has concentrated its breeding program on Showa Sanshoku, and Mano's name has become closely associated with Showa valued for striking pattern, strong growth, and koi that continue to improve in beauty with age. Over roughly 30,000 square meters, the farm uses Niigata's traditional outdoor mud ponds through the warmer months and moves stock into indoor greenhouses for winter, where feeding and skin quality are closely monitored. Each generation of the farm's Showa is selectively bred to strengthen jet-black sumi that emerges with power and strong contrast against the variety's red and white ground.
