Marusaka Koi Farm was founded around 1948 by Teruchiyo Hiroi in the Utogi area of Ojiya City, Niigata Prefecture — a region regarded as the birthplace of nishikigoi. The farm was refined by successor Teruo Hiroi and is now led by third-generation owner Teruyuki Hiroi, who took over the operation in his early thirties. Marusaka covers roughly 50,000 square meters across about 80 mud ponds, maintains around 20 parent stock, and produces approximately 55,000 koi annually. The farm is best known for its metallic varieties — Kin Kikokuryu, Kikokuryu, Kujaku, and Lemon Hariwake — and has also worked to stabilize a distinct Marusaka Sanke bloodline derived from Jinbei lines.
